HIED-807 Academic Advising
Course Reflection

I strongly believe that academic advising is an essential element of students’ college experience. It is an ongoing relationship between advisor and advisee that focuses on helping students connect higher education with education, career, and life goals. Advising helps promote student participation, supports intellectual, and personal development toward academic success. The aspects that appeal the most to me in academic advising are student engagement, service learning, student programs, leadership, and academic success. It’s my belief that advisors who have expertise in these areas have the ability to impact not just students but the entire general education curriculum, as well as activities that involve and promote student engagement.

The biggest take away was the skill-building exercises, which influenced my academic advising experience and ability to serve as an academic adviser by enhancing my skill abilities and promote student program participation, engagement, service learning, leadership, intellectual support, and personal development toward academic success. It has also improved my ability to further analyze students and record detail notes during advising sessions and brought awareness to keep the separate public and confidential records. The tools provided assisted me in supporting students’ transition to prosper in their academic experiences by being able to impact their general education curriculum and promote student engagement.
This course experience helped me shape my philosophy by broadening my views of academic advising and bringing awareness to the complexities of today’s higher education student body, policies, and procedures, as well as the larger role that academic advising plays across institutions. It has expanded my focus on building actual relationships with advisees and lengthened my understanding of the value of personal and ethical foundations which involves knowledge, skills, and dispositions that develops and maintains one integrity and line of work. It has also reassured my pledge to develop and adhere to a comprehensive standard of ethical behavior and commitment to students’ wellness and growth. In addition, it has created a larger commitment to my personal professional development that will enable me to practice, model, mentor, and facilitate resources for students and professional peers.

The knowledge acquired from this course will assist me in becoming a better advocate for students’ rights to demonstrate the importance of engaging students in active learning, ethical practices, effective management of resources, and networking. In other words, I like to make a difference in students’ lives holistically leading achievement and overall success.
