HIED-560 Legal Issues in Higher Education

                                  Course Reflection

I must confess that I had entered the course without any legal knowledge or what so ever, the reason why I felt this course would be extremely challenging for me. Surprisingly, as challenging as it was at times the readings, I was at gust to realize how much I ended up enjoying the topics at hand and getting into them.
One of the most valuable things that I learned this semester was about the nature of higher education law. The knowledge and insight acquired through all the legal case studies presented were the most enjoyable parts of the course for me, especially since these cases addressed current and past key issues, including actual events that have had great impact in the higher education field. Therefore, I found the cases to be interesting, educational and eye-opening. Although the cases were challenging to comprehend at times, and I found myself reading the cases several times, these helped me become more acquainted with legal terms, while enriching my vocabulary and level of understanding about legal matters.

Also, the personal reflections aided me to expand and stimulate my learning, by pushing me to dig deeper into specific content areas. The reflections allowed me to piece together the information learned through the readings and discussions, while encouraging me to apply my personal thought process and critical thinking, in order to present my own analytical perspectives. I feel that I’m leaving the course with a general and basic understanding of how the legal system at the federal and state level works in the courts when handling and deciding cases. In addition, I leave with a good awareness of how these legal standards can potentially affect professional areas of work within higher education. I must admit this course has been a true enlightening to my learning experience.
