ACADEMIC ADVISING PHILOSOPHY
My advising philosophy supports competence among individuals and groups through direction, feedback, critique, referral, and guidance by developing advising and supporting strategies that take into account self-knowledge and the needs of others. It also aligns social justice, diversity, and learning, including the utilization of virtual resources and technology to meet advising and supporting students’ needs. It’s driven on the practice of social responsibility which seeks to carry out equity in the distribution of resources, to meet the diverse student group’s needs, and raising social consciousness that includes students and the community in a larger context. Through this philosophy, I understand the value of developing integrity in the academic advising field. The important role that advisers play in students’ life by using appropriate nonverbal communication, facilitating problem-solving, individual decision-making, and goal setting strategies that help students make decisions related to their education, career, and personal life experiences while implementing short and long-term goals.
My philosophy promotes challenges and supports students and colleagues by establishing rapport, recognizing the strengths, weaknesses, and limitations. It embraces the need to be aware of the use of referral sources and referral skills in order to seek expert assistance when needed. It also facilitates reflection in helping to make sense from students’ experiences, groups, colleagues, and others, by maintaining an appropriate degree of confidentiality. It allows trusting relationships, as well as recognizing confidentiality to protect students while following applicable laws and institutional policies.
My philosophy also initiates and exercises intervention strategies to respond to processes and procedures by collaborating with other departments, as well as external community organizations/agencies and other institutions in higher education, so as to address students’ holistic wellness needs in a comprehensive and collaborative way. An important perspective in my philosophy is that it embraces teaching and learning processes that engage advisor/student relationships to promote academic success.
Part of my philosophy is to create educational experiences for students that are challenging and enriching that extends beyond their academic abilities, I like to incorporate my learning into my career by seeking a leadership position within the student affairs field. I also would like to play a role where I can assess and reexamine policies and procedures on a larger scale that impact the student body rather than one student at the time because it produces student engagement and success. Consequently, I like to ensure that students receive the best advising service and guidance throughout their college experience. As a result, I believe this will help promote respectful interactions and an achievement-oriented culture that contains good results in enhancing students’ social and emotional competencies.
My portfolio experience has helped me shape my philosophy by broadening my views of academic advising and bringing awareness to the complexities of today’s higher education student body, policies, and procedures, as well as the larger role that academic advising plays across institutions. It has expanded my focus on building actual relationships with advisees and lengthened my understanding of the value of personal and ethical foundations which involves knowledge, skills, and dispositions that develops and maintains one integrity and line of work. It has also reassured my pledge to develop and adhere to a comprehensive standard of ethical behavior and commitment to students’ wellness and growth.
In addition, my overall experience has created a larger commitment to my personal and professional development that will enable me to practice, model, mentor, and facilitate resources for students and professional peers. Incorporating and sharing my learning experiences with others in the field will reflect team leadership models that focus on values such as respect, discipline, integrity, excellence, hospitality, acceptance, diversity, and implementing new practices. This approach will assist me in becoming a better advocate for students’ rights to demonstrate the importance of engaging students in active learning, ethical practices, effective management of resources, and networking. In other words, I like to make a difference in students’ lives holistically leading achievement and overall success.
